The Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College-Holy Cross seeks to facilitate and advance dialogue with other Christian churches and faith communities, particularly around theological and ethical, as well as pastoral and practical dimensions of contemporary issues and social challenges.
Together with our Board of Directors, Advisory Council and leadership, we strive to explore and express the fundamental ethos of the Orthodox Church in an open encounter and honest engagement with other churches and faiths, as well as other academic institutions and scientific disciplines. In this regard, the Institute pursues theological and pastoral questions in the search for shared Christian goals—the heart and pulse of ecumenical relations.
The Pappas Patristic Institute at Holy Cross is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of patristic studies in service to both the academy and the Church. It is devoted especially to the study of the Greek Fathers and the Byzantine theological tradition.
Established in 2003 through a generous grant from the late Stephen and Catherine Pappas, the Institute boasts a diverse board of scholars in patristic studies and allied fields and enjoys close cooperation with other seminaries, theological schools, and universities in the Boston area.
The Institute pursues and supports patristic scholarship through conferences, lectures, summer programs, and publishing.
The Missions Institute of Orthodox Christianity promotes a vibrant missionary consciousness among students and seminarians in the United States. By offering missiological courses, mission practica, special programs, and events, the Institute helps future Church leaders understand the centrality of missions, evangelism, and outreach. The intent is to inspire students to participate in and to develop such ministries in their future pastoral work.
Fr. Luke Veronis, Director of the Missions Institute, offers students from Hellenic College Holy Cross and three other seminaries a special summer class and mission practicum each year. The class combines a three-credit academic course entitled The Missiology of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania with a ten-day mission trip, during which students visit and participate in the missionary ministry of the Church in Albania. It is part academic class, part mission trip, and part holy pilgrimage.
Additionally, the Institute partners with the student-run HCHC Missions Committee each Fall to sponsor the annual Missions Week. Invited missionaries from around the globe spend a week on campus speaking in classes and interacting with students. The week is highlighted by the annual EFOM Missions Lecture.
The Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of knowledge about the rich heritage of the Byzantine Empire. The Center encourages the study and appreciation of the arts and culture of the Byzantine Empire, which influenced the history of three continents during a history spanning more than one thousand years.
Founded in 2010 through a generous gift from the Jaharis Family Foundation, the Center’s programs contribute to an understanding of Byzantium’s enduring cultural and historical legacy.
Its establishment at Hellenic College Holy Cross enables the Mary Jaharis Center to foster Byzantine studies within an Orthodox Christian community. It promotes the study of Byzantium from the perspective of Orthodox theology, scholarship, and the arts.
The Center is committed to Byzantine studies within and beyond the academy and strives to create programming and educational and research resources that engage scholars, the Orthodox Christian community, and the wider public.
The New York Life Insurance Company Center for the Study of Hellenism in Pontus and Asia Minor was established in January 2009 by agreement between the New York Life Insurance Company and Hellenic College, Inc., through an endowment grant from NY Life. The hallmark program of the Center is the biennial Asia Minor Travel Seminar. The New York Life Center also promotes the study of Hellenism in Pontus and Asia Minor through lectures and other programming on the Hellenic College Holy Cross campus. Through all these programs, the Center seeks to advance the HCHC mission of spiritual formation, intellectual development, and student awareness of the universal intellectual and cultural values of the Hellenic heritage.
